We like Vasquez’s middle-of-the-road, pragmatic positions. Springfield needs more nonideological lawmakers focused on serving the needs of their constituents.

I felt the calling to be a police officer from a young age because I wanted to protect my family. Growing up in one of Chicago’s more dangerous neighborhoods, I recognized that police officers placed themselves between dangerous people and my family, my friends and my neighbors. The two days when I felt the most pride in my profession were the first day I was sworn into my dream job and my last day after 32 years of service performed honorably, ethically and effectively.
I support a 1% cap on property annual increases. As a father of four young adults and from my own experience as a working class union member with four children, I understand the difficulties in saving to acquire a home. Saving for a down payment is a struggle compounded by rising property assessments and constantly rising property tax increases. In order for Illinois to maintain stable working-class communities, young families need to be able to afford reasonable property mortgages and property tax payments in safe neighborhoods.
Personal Choices: I believe the government should stay out of our homes, bedrooms and doctor’s offices. The Roe v. Wade standard applies to all Illinois residents regardless of what the Federal government decides. No person or family wants to be faced with these hard decisions, but these decisions need to be made by individuals — not the government.
School Choices: Three Catholic schools closed in our district because my opponent, Abdelnasser Rashid, voted to eliminate tuition tax credits for parents working multiple jobs to afford private school tuition for their children. St Odilo’s School (Berwyn), St. Francis of Rome (Cicero) and St. Joseph’s (Summit) will not be a choice for parents in the Fall of 2024. Parents should have the freedom to choose the schools they want for their children without being punished financially by the government.
